Insurance Tips for RV'rs

Most Auto Insurance companies will insure an RV, but an RV is a house as well as a vehicle. Therefore you should investigate as to how the auto insurance company will treat the RV in the case of a claim.

If you own a house you probably have personal liability insurance as part of your homeowners. If so you do not need personal liability as part of a RV insurance package. Your homeowners may also cover contents of the RV. But if you no longer have a house fastened to the ground you need coverages designed specifically for RVs. What you need is a specialized policy designed for RVs even if you have homeowners coverage. Just don't add the full timers personal liability coverage.

If you have an RV that is less than 5 years old look for an insurer that provides full replacement, even if it has to be a new RV of like kind. This is generally available only from insurers that specialize in RV coverage, not from auto insurance coverage. There are several very good providers that advertize in RV magazines.

Another area of specialized RV coverage is for roadside service. The standard auto roadside service providers are not familiar with the special requirements of RVs. Towing takes a much larger truck than would be sent out for autos and small trucks. Tire changing takes specialized equipment. Problems with slideouts or other RV unique problems need to be dealt with by someone that is familiar with RVs. There are a couple of very good RV roadside service companies and you should be able to find them advertizing in RV magazines. Or ask a fellow RV'er that has had experience with roadside service. They are all great until you need to use them!

A life saving tip:

If ever you are in an RV that is on fire get out immediately! Do not pass GO do not collect $200, in Monopoly parlance. Everything the RV is made of extreemly flameable materials except the steel frame. You have propane and gasoline or diesel fuel that is just waiting to explode. It will be in total flames in a couple of minutes. Do not try to salvage valuables, there just isn't time!
